Interview with Claudia Christian!

I made this: Unknown at 9:19 pm 0 comments
There just isn't enough SQUEE in the world really.

LeedsBookClub is delighted to welcome the sublime
Claudia Christian
who joined us this week.

To hoards of SF fans, Claudia will always be General Susan Ivanova from Babylon 5 - one of the greatest SF characters in one of the greatest SF TV series EVER. However - as you'll hear during our chat - she's a true renaissance woman, with a diverse range of activities and creative outlets.

She writes. She sings. She enjoys food, travel and books. She's even written a few herself! All that on top of portraying countless memorable characters across tv and film. AND single handedly destroyed a small fleet.

Intimidating?

Just a touch.

During out chat we start off by discussing Claudia's latest project - it's more of a mission really - narrating One Little Pill. This is a documentary to raise awareness of The Sinclair Method - a revolutionary and scientific treatment for alcohol addiction that, Claudia frankly admits, saved her life. Claudia has been so determined to heighten the profile of this method, that she has founded a charity - the C Three Foundation.

From there, we discuss her no holds barred autobiography - Babylon Confidential - a memoir of love, sex and addiction. Every life story that comes out of Hollywood claims to be honest and open - this one actually delivers! Every soaring height and each crushing fall is explored with an often heartbreaking forthrightness. It turns out that Claudia is every bit as passionate, funny and honest in person!

Finally, we moved onto Babylon 5. It's been 15 years since the show ended and the friendships created (and indeed the fandom) have sustained and become legend. It's always such a pleasure to discuss something that you love with someone involved in the process - to have it held in their hearts too is just a cherry on top. Or a raspberry...I don't like cherries.

Spoilers for all of Babylon 5.
And life the universe and everything.

Language warnings apply as usual.

Interview with Mark Catley

I made this: Unknown at 10:10 pm 0 comments
Leeds Book Club is thrilled to be joined by Mark Catley - a scriptwriter for TV (such as Casualty, Eastenders and a Call the Midwife episode here and there) and the stage (Angus Thongs and Scuffer).

We discuss his upcoming production at the West Yorkshire Playhouse of Sherlock Holmes - Best Kept Secret (squee!); his love for Conan Doyle and the challenge of creating a new story for illustrious pre-existing characters. From there we also chat about the differences between writing for TV versus the Stage; his writing approaches and the cultural landscape of Leeds.

So far so intellectual right?

We might have also had a mini-geek out over Joss Whedon and Buffy. And Doctor Horrible.
It's kinda awesome. *ahem*

Anyhoo - to the Podcast mobile!

There are no spoilers for anything that isn't old enough for us to no longer feel even a scrap of guilt about it and very minimal language warnings.

Interview with Peter Bullimore - Podcast

I made this: Unknown at 1:37 pm 0 comments
Leeds Book Club is delighted to have the chance to chat with Peter Bullimore.

Peter was the Guest Speaker at the Sharking Stories launch at Leeds Central Library last month. Peter represented the Hearing Voices Network, and spoke eloquently, honesty and humorously about his experiences. Peter had been a successful business and family man until his mental health deteriorated and he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. For the following eight years, Peter became a ‘revolving door’ patient – in and out of various mental health services.

Peter now divides his time now between chairing the Sheffield Hearing Voices Network, the Paranoia Network – a self help organisation for people experiencing extreme paranoia – which he co-founded and is the business manager of Asylum – a magazine for democratic psychiatry.

In his spare time, Peter and his voices have collaborated on a children’s book entitled ‘A Village called Pumpkin'.

SOUND WARNING
Unfortunately, I have a horrible cold at the moment, so sound bunged up and raspy. Peter had a very strange feedback thingy that kicked in every now and again so there are occasional echoes throughout. However, we had a terrific conversation and IMHO it's worth the effort!

Quelle surprise, we managed to behave so I think I can skip our usual language and spoilers warnings. Huzzah for us!

I made this: Unknown at 7:59 pm 0 comments

LeedsBookClub are delighted to be joined by Ruth F Long - author of Tales of the Holtlands, The Scroll Thief and - her most recent novel - The Treachery of Beautiful Things for our most recent podcast.

Ruth and I were chatting over skype and though it sounded fine at the time, our conversation is sadly a little fuzzy in spots.

We chat about books, writing, publishing, some films and tv and we'd have happily gone on for hours if real life hadn't intervened!

If you'd like to chat with Ruth in more detail - and trust me, you should - you'll find her on twitter @RFLong.

Quelle surprise, we managed to behave so I think I can skip our usual language and spoilers warnings. Huzzah for us!

Podcast Interview with Lucinda Hawksley!!!

I made this: Unknown at 3:50 pm 0 comments
* * *PODCAST* * *

Lucinda Hawksley - travel author, art historian and tweeter - was kind enough to have a bit of a chat with me for your listening pleasure!

As I've just finished Lizzie Siddal - the tragedy of a Pre-Raphaelite Supermodel, we had a good natter about that. We also chatted about travel writing, the Pre-Raphaelite artists and Charles Dickens - Lucinda's great great great grandfather.

Every now and again, we were randomly attacked by some white noise, but I've hopefully managed to edit that out of the recording!

***LANGUAGE WARNING ***
- We're actually very restrained. We barely swear at all!!
