Booky Blog - Inferno and The Rosie Project

I made this: Unknown at 1:07 pm
30th of May 2013

Well, I finished Inferno by Dan Brown.

I quite enjoyed it, though the ending is impossibly silly. In fact, the latter few chapters are utterly ridiculous.

It's probably the first Dan Brown novel I've ever read where I consistently cared more for the artwork and literature mentioned & described than the plot, despite not entirely buying into the connection that apparently exsisted between the art and the plot!
No, I take that back - just remembered Digital Fortress and Deception Point - wasn't particularly enamoured with either of their plots either.

Oh the plot...paper thin and increasingly grating towards the big reveal - though - I feel I have to mention - he did manage to break away from a few of his usual patterns. It was pretty enjoyable to realise that I was totally wrong about the ...SPOILERS! Oooh, you nearly got me that time!

Unless you're a committed Dan Brown fan, I'm not sure that I'd reccommend this. There are much better crime novels set in Florence and Venice (oh please please read The Book of Human Skin by Michelle Lovric - just fantastic!) and - if you're interested in Dante's creation - you'd be better off finding a decent translation and giving that a go than reading this and expecting any sort of meaningful insight.

Having heard nothing but good things from work colleagues, friends and the Elf (read her thoughts HERE), I've finally loaded The Rosie Project by Graeme Simpson onto my kindle.

BLURB
Don Tillman is a socially challenged genetics professor who's decided the time has come to find a wife. His questionnaire is intended to weed out anyone who's unsuitable. The trouble is, Don has rather high standards and doesn't really do flexible so, despite lots of takers - he looks like Gregory Peck - he's not having much success in identifying The One.

When Rosie Jarman comes to his office, Don assumes it's to apply for the Wife Project - and duly discounts her on the grounds she smokes, drinks, doesn't eat meat, and is incapable of punctuality. However, Rosie has no interest in becoming Mrs Tillman and is actually there to enlist Don's assistance in a professional capacity: to help her find her biological father.

Sometimes, though, you don't find love: love finds you...
So far, it's absolutely terrific! Don is an enchanting oddball and tonally I think the author has hit the perfect note. I can't wait to finish this and will let you know my thoughts ASAP!

I'm predicting that the movie rights will  be picked up before I finish it!

:-)
